      • Hello Kristin-

My name is Allen Humphrey. My wife Chris and I live in Tampa and I thought I would share a story about your grandfather. My wife’s father was Irving Stephens of Miami. He had been an Admiral in the Coast Guard and after he retired he became the first Port Director at the Port of Miami. He met your grandfather at an art show sometime in the late 60’s or early 70’s. They became friends and my wife’s father purchased several pieces from your grandfather. At some point my wife wanted to give her dad a birthday or Christmas gift. She approached your grandfather and asked him if he could do something, but emphasized that she did not have much money. Anyway a week or so later he let her know he had finished his creation and when she travelled to pick it up she noticed it was a lot larger than she imagined. He had painted a ship’s bell with the Coat Guard Emblem on it. My wife nearly passed out in fright over the price stating she had expected something small and “economical”. He told her that “Steve” was a dear friend and the price would be just $100. After all these years we still have that custom painting. As mentioned besides that painting my wife’s father had purchased five or six others one the years which we also still have. My question is would that special painting have any particular value since it was a specially commissioned piece unknown to any collector? Sorry for the length post and question. I hope to hear back from you!

      • Hi Allen! That’s a great story. Thank you so much for sharing. It certainly sounds like something my grandfather would do. I’m glad his art was able to bring happiness to you and your family. Unfortunately, I can’t offer any advice on what the painting might be worth but I’m sure someone who’s been in the Coast Guard or collects Coast Guard memorabilia would find it an interesting addition to their collection. I’m glad you shared your story – it’s always so nice to hear from someone who knew him.
