The Yankee whalers sailed the seas with two men aloft on look-out. When the what was sighted, the cry of “She blows, she blows” was called from the tops. The helmsman brought the ship around and up into the wind, laying all of her sails aback and stopping all forward motion.

The skipper gave the command “Away all boats” and all available crew ran to launch the ship’s boats. They were lowered away and with the oars well manned, they were off in pursuit of the mighty whale.
